An Athlete's Touch on Health Insurance
Back when I was in school sports, I had my fair share of abrasions. I had the common aliments of sprains, strains, and bruises that seems almost a given for any athlete. Occasionally I would encounter the more serious injuries or falls that would entitle an emergency room visit and some follow up physical therapy.
As a student athlete at the time I was covered under my parent’s health insurance plan. Back then, I did not think much of going to the doctor to have him look at my swollen knee nor did I give a second thought to getting his prescription for an anti-inflammatory filled. I would just hand over my insurance card so they could copy down my policy number and off I went. It was not until I was older and had children of my own did I realize how crucial it is to have health insurance on an active individual.
Injuries do not just happen on the baseball field or in the high school gym. They can happen anywhere that anyone is exerting physical energy. It could happen when you are taking your morning jog through the park, a bike ride around the block, or even when you are playing catch in the yard. Regardless if you tear a ligament in your knee while diving for the volleyball or if you break your nose missing the baseball your child threw, in either situation you are going to need to have it looked at by a medical professional.
Having health insurance is going to drastically offset the amount of money that comes out of your pocket to pay for a doctor visit. Having that health insurance card in your wallet or purse will actually make you breathe easier if you have to go to the emergency room or make the follow up appointment. Knowing you have health insurance coverage gives you the piece of mind knowing that if your next fall breaks your leg, it will not have to break your bank.
